Recapping Our Exclusive Event & Celebrating Our Community!

We had a wonderful morning connecting with industry partners, peers, and community members to hear Dr. Adam Fremeth of Ivey School of Business, explain how the current economic state affects all of us.

Key takeaways from the “Canada in a Volatile World” presentation were:

  • It is key to look at each country differently
  • While the data indicates we may be heading toward a recession, experts believe it will not be as drastic
  • Due to inflation and the current state of opportunities, much of the workforce is retiring early
  • It is important not to skip a generation of growth, as we cannot go back
  • Fiscal policies and inflation affect hiring and retention more than we think

Thank you so much to Adam, who armed us with exclusive data and an understanding of economics that will help us provide the best services for our clients.

We’d also like to thank our incredible attendees for making this event a success! It was wonderful to see you all in person.

Our community is filled with so many incredible organizations, doing their part to serve their stakeholders. Today, let’s take a look at KAIROS Canada, a non for profit ecumenical movement for ecological justice and human rights around the globe.

Recently, our President Gisela Carere participated in the KAIROS Blanket exercise, which shares the Canadian story from an Indigenous perspective with thousands of Canadians and newcomers.

She has been able to bring that knowledge to Benchmark, and we are so grateful for the unique experience.

Tell us about the KAIROS Blanket Exercise and what you do:

KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives is a movement that unites ten Canadian churches and religious organizations in a faithful ecumenical response to a call for justice. Guided by a mandate and vision for a more just, equitable and sustainable world, we work together with people of faith or conscience to advance Indigenous rights as well as migrant, gender and ecological justice.  Our programs and projects have had a significant impact all over the world.

This year, we celebrate 25 years of our flagship program, the KAIROS Blanket Exercise (KBE). In 1996, in response to the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples,  the Aboriginal Rights Coalition (which became part of KAIROS in 2001) worked with Indigenous elders and educators to develop an experiential learning tool that narrates the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in a Canadian context.

The KAIROS Blanket Exercise uses blankets to represent the lands of what is now called Canada. Participants are taken back in time to journey through the shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous people walking through a scripted experience of pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization, resilience and resistance that resulted in the country we today know as Canada.

The Virtual KAIROS Blanket Exercise (vKBE), is an evolution of the KBE developed during the pandemic that allowed us to continue to deliver the program and reach more people, globally and in remote communities. It has proven to be very popular.

KAIROS and its partners have offered the KAIROS Blanket Exercise thousands of times, presenting Canada’s history from the perspective of Indigenous peoples to churches, schools and diverse communities from coast to coast to coast. We have also facilitated KBEs in countries such as Australia, Ecuador, Guatemala and the United States to name a few.

Additionally, our Winds of Change program monitors the progress of the Truth and Reconciliation of Canada’s Call to Action 62.1 – to ensure that the history and contributions of Indigenous Peoples are included in grade school curriculums.

Stay tuned to future Newsletters for more information on what the future looks like for KAIROS!
